Isopropyl myristate (IPM) is used as a flavor ingredient, primarily as a solvent or carrier oil for flavor compounds. It can also act as a thickening agent, emollient, and diluent in food flavorings. In perfumes it helps to dissolve and evenly distribute fragrance oils, enhancing their absorption into the skin and improving longevity. IPM also acts as a skin-conditioning emollient, improving the feel of the fragrance on the skin. In fragrances it helps to stabilize aromatic compounds, and improve the diffusion and longevity of scents. IPM is also used in alcohol-free perfumes and can be found in various cosmetic and personal care products like creams, lotions, and body oils. In topical and transdermal formulations it is utized in enhancing penetration.
